In this second half of the book, we are going to apply the 5 simple truths to address kids' behaviors as they related to 5 modern issues:

Television

Videogames

Social networks

Texting

Bullying

I chose these issues for a couple of reasons. First, they receive a lot of media attention. Second, I get a lot of questions about them from parents.

In approaching each of these issues, we will apply the 5 simple truths in three phases. Although this book will focus on the five issues I mentioned, the approach will work for any issue that concerns you and the kids in your life.

Phases to Applying the 5 Simple Truths

Phase 1: Analyze the perceptions of what the kid is doing

Remember kids are good

Look for research that measures the behavior in question

Be a parent or be an adult Be a present to the kid to witness the behavior

Be persistent in questioning the kid about the behavior

Be patient
